Finally went and fiddled with it. Oddly, its pretty entertaining as a game...

First night I scrambled around with the uh first night "OMG FIND A PLACE TO HIDE AND MAKE LIGHTS" scramble. I ended up getting plopped on a half desert, half forest area (but predominately desert). Trees ad cacti were not so hard to find, but when I found coal the sun was setting down. I proceeded to burrow right into the wall where I found the coal some and block the entry off.

Burrowed a little bit in, made a divet in the wall and dropped the workbench to make things with. It wasn't a bad place at all, the doorway had a nice overhang and it was almost a cliff, making it hard for things to get to the door.

Decided however to expand a little bit as this may make a useful base of operations. One thing that had been bothering me is the array of monster-related noise from all sides. So I tunneled a bit to the right after they ceased to investigate why there was so much noise from this one side.

    Eep.

I broke into a cave system, finding that I was living over a very large drop into a pit of death (or you could call it a mine). Proceeded to seal it up post haste as I was unsure what was out in the dark.

I did find the entrance to the mine and bravely trudged forward making sure to torch the place as brightly as I could. Was getting tired of nearing noises down there and wanted to see what I could dig up. Consequently was pin cushioned by a skeleton, and had to run back for my stuff.

Next day I figured out how to make a furnace, and consequently also figured out how to make my near limitless supply of sand into glass. Added windows, and window-fied my cavern view. Of course this is great because it makes a strange difference when you have windows. Its quite nice. The downside is I turned around the next night to find a creeper had made that one in a million jump and thankfully hadn't noticed me yet on the other side of the glass. More occasions netted me cases of monsters pressing their faces flat on the glass absentmindedly.

That wasn't a particularily good morning either, as the front door was camped by a pack of three creepers and many spiders. Spent the day very carefully excavating through my teetering deathtrap home to make a back door.

... Then I discovered how to make doors and was pleased. Each end got a door so I would no longer have to scramble to block up the holes I used as doors and worry about getting camped inside by some crazy critter.

Its now much more home-looking, I've made a nice ceiling and its got more than enough window. Torches are all over it outside, I can see it from a good distance off. While I can technically no longer dig to expand as I've basically burrowed out the hillside (carefully!), I think perhaps I still can expand by trying to create a path into the cavern system below, or build upwards for new levels to create a tower with.

Hehe, my first experience with a creeper was before I learned about windows. Im standing next to a little hole I made in the wall of my fort when all of a sudden I hear fhssssssssssssssss...BOOM! When my poor chara finaly picked it/hisself up. halft he fort was gone and I had a big hole protecting me from the rest of the creepers.

Yeah, Creepers can see through walls, as well as being able to climb without arms.

    They're basically cactus-shaped griefers. =P

Dug the tunnel down into the mine, patched up the pit hole with wood scaffolding blocks and tunnelled into the wall to make some stairs down. Did some additional anti-monster safety things and more hole patching (Unfortunately it means I now have to enter the mine through my house, no entry from outside).

I explored it a bit, and I had been exploring it a lot previous with my forays to gather stone to build my upper level with. It would seem the cavern I accidentally found is absolutely massive!

Just when I thought I had explored everything, I find a new branch to go poke down and only stop when I have to find a new way in, ie: tunnel into it because its a sheer drop. I found two of these places today and had to turn back in one after running out of torches. At the end of the first I found what looked like a burning cage with a zombie in it surrounded by two chests full of goodies. Problem: The burning cage was creating zombies. Several deaths later I had collected the chest contents and my own things before boarding up the exit with wood blocks (to remind myself you shouldn't dig there; using rocks or dirt just looks the same and is liable to be dug when I forget).

    It goes on forever.

You can also put logs in the furnace and make charcoal, if there is a scarcity of regular coal around.

I've had no issues finding coal in the cave... its almost everywhere down there. The trees are not as easy to find above ground. Just a matter of keeping torches in inventory when I can get some wood.

Correcting myself: They've been mostly chopped down over time, so I'm having to move farther to get to the trees.

The best thing for trees is to set up a tree farm in your HQ. Dig a big cavern with a ceiling at least 7 blocks high. Line the floor with dirt. Set up a grid of torches on the ground with a torch on every other square (trees need lots of light). Plant a sapling in the space in the middle of the torches:

    t = torch e=empty T=tree

    t e t
    e T e
    t e t

Get a decent farm going and you'll have more wood than you know what to do with.

Actually, with the introduction of bone meal as of recent updates, tree farms are pretty much obsolete. All you need is a sapling and a relatively open area and after you plant the sapling, right click on it with the bone meal and *poof* Insta-Grow! Harvest wood, let leaves decay and collect any saplings. Rinse and repeat.

I've never run out of logs since.

    Blerrrgh.

Character died en route to a location I discovered above ground and established as an obsidian factory. En route to collect my things, the game crashed out, causing me to lose several diamond picks and other diamond headed tools.

    Not happy.

D: I know that pain all too well... *sobs quietly* Eventually you'll find more diamonds and you can make more. That's why I always keep a few extra diamonds tucked away at my home base for occasions where I lose my stuff.

    Yes, if you're quick enough.

So, it was nighttime and I was going out to kill some skeletons for their bones and as I proceded down to my docks I happened to see this:

Yes, that is a skeleton riding a spider in the water =P
After taking a couple hits I ran and locked myself in my house for the rest of the night.

Lol I've been busy building my snazzy house and totally forgot that any dark enough space spawns baddies. So I'm all toting around near the ceiling rafters building the rest of the ceiling shut and i hear some random ominous music and I'm like.. 'huh... that's weird... laaadiiiiddaa' i keep on workin' right? So I close off the ceiling completely, awesomely satisfied at my accomplishment, I do a celebratory little jig. I get down and it's just after dawn and i hear the familiar moaning sound and i'm like 'oh hah, they must still be outside from last night, well hah! I'll have a nice bonfire once the sun comes up! Har har mwahaha...'

Then I get down to the ground inside my awesome little fortress house, it's nice and pitch black and I'm tottering towards the front door and I turn around to affix a torch to the wall and i see a movement.

Now... As we all know, sheep and other random deranged mobs like to join in our building fun and invade our homes, bouncing and moo'ing in our faces and blocking our way to BUILD A FRICKIN WALL! D8<

So I'm just goin' 'Oh look who spent the night, goddamn sheep....rawr.....' and I kind of by then had stepped closer to see if I could smack it, and literally I went from 'haw haw happeeeeyyyy moment to... OMFGRUNAAUUUGGGHHHOOHGODIT'SONME!!!! ZOMBIEOHSHIIIIIIIIII---!!!!!' As I'm yelping and hurtling backwards as fast as I can towards where I presumed the front door to still be, somewhere behind me, I manage to squeeze out the door just as my heart is squeezing up into my throat in abject startlement and horror, the freakin zombie comes racing out after me. Catches on fire. I fall stupidly off the cliff backwards that my house sits on. I land near the little pond nearby. THE FLAMING ZOMBIE IS STILL RUNNING AFTER ME!! I'm already like down to 1/3rd health from the falling and an earlier swipe he got in. My game lags juuuust enough for the zombie to make the uber leap after me. He smacks me like a machine gun and kills me. I'm left staring up lifelessly and crying at a flaming zombie groaning and jumping around on my carcass.

    T_____T

Needless to say I installed windows everywhere, added a monstrous skylight, and have pretty much violated every fire and safety code in the housing textbooks by putting torches on every square in a stripe border around the middle of my house.

    Lol...
