At the beginning: Getting beyond 1..1..1..1... (a guide)
The first stage of crafting is gathering materials, and it is very slow. Here are three methods for getting a gathering skill up to where it's more 3..5..2..7 ish:
1) Hunt maggots, and consume the crystals that they drop. Esp. good for the first half-dozen levels of a crafting school.
2) Buy and use reaping potions (good for 25-50 points of skill). Difficult to find for sale, however.
3) Make or buy yourself customized gear that boosts your gathering skill. You can raise your crafting skill about 60 points with first-tier customized gear.
It takes a little less than 3 hours to get mining skill from 0 to 130-ish, starting from scratch:
-- 15 minutes to hunt maggots, for enough crystals to get the Miner school to level 6
-- 1 hour to hunt Cedar Treant Saplings (level 7), to get their Cedar Treant Sapling Limbs, the technique component used to make Mining gear.
-- the rest of the time to run around gather materials, buy the formulas for the equipment, and get to player-made crafting stations to scribe formulas and craft the mining teched gear.
A gathering skill boost can be put on 4 pieces of armor, 5 pieces of jewelry, the gathering tool, and a sack. In addition, a 'boon' boost can be put on 5 more equipment pieces (3x armor + 2x jewelry), for a total of 59 skill points. The quartermaster in Sslanis sells the technique for the gathering/crafting skills, but the boon techniques are dropped by humanoid monsters. Players in the Marketplace chat will often be willing to craft the gear for you, if you have all the components (which is very helpful if the trip to Sslanis is still too difficult).
For the monster components, here's what to hunt:
Mining Cedar Treant Saplings
Quarrying Enraged Dim Wisps
Fishing Small Loricatus Beetles
and less useful (because they're higher level, in the teens)
Foraging Venomous Stalker Aggressor
Essence Harvesting Agh'kuk Warrior
Logging Bronze Boulder Golem

Nice guide I like it! very good job! all useful information included.
Perhaps it would also be useful to add that buffs slightly help with crafting skills (enhances, gifts, surges, raises)
Re: At the beginning: Getting beyond 1..1..1..1... (a guide)
*big winghug* thank you for that- its helpful for even vets--
cause we can send new players to this thread-and not have to produce walls of text
(with lots of typos from my side^^)
make it sticky
Re: At the beginning: Getting beyond 1..1..1..1... (a guide)
Some other hints for beginners:
(besides mentioning that stats help -- you want that mining jewelry to be Strength, not Power)
Anything that raises the appropriate stat will help, like potions, jewelry, or stat buffs in unused armor locations.
Gift of Alacrity will speed up your gathering rate, so do abilities that raise attack speed/lower delay (like Ranger's Energize), and they stack.
When smelting/spinning/stoneworking/etc., you can raise your processing skill by using player-made buildings. The expert biped buildings will add 75 skill levels. You can also use these to scribe a formula that you can't normally scribe because of its high skill requirement; go to the machine, and start creation of another item, then scribe the formula while the creation window is open.
Some raw material spawns have two locations, and one of the locations will become nearly empty if the other isn't harvested. (e.g., flax and also kenaf on Fabric Isle).

Adding my 2 cents onto this.
Bipeds can also use the dragon shops if I'm not remembering it incorrectly, and a T6 smelter/essence shaper/etc will actually give a bonus of +90!
Re: At the beginning: Getting beyond 1..1..1..1... (a guide)
Gifts, enhances, raises, surges and even dragon buffs can be helpful in raising craft skills that last little bit you need to get to optimum. You may think buffing is only for adventuring, but you'd be wrong! A buffed crafter can often get things done more effectively than an un-buffed one. However, some buffs don't stack or cancel out one another so take care in choosing which one to use based on the craft skill(s) you want boosted.

To check how much certain skill is boosted by which stats, check istaria wiki and type in your crafting skill. (example gemworking). It will show you how much skill is affected by attributes (strength, dexterity, power, focus). You can base on that and choose your buffs and tech your gear appropriately.

Very nice thread, would have helped to have this when I was a hatch
Re: At the beginning: Getting beyond 1..1..1..1... (a guide)
If its possible this thread should merge all helpful posts into one and then be placed on top as sticky.
