Crafting...tips or tricks?

Ok, I'm new to this game...tell me crafting doesn't always take this long...

So, I've had the game for 3 days now. I've managed to get my character up to level 12, but only after grouping. Solo as a 12 scout/ 10 cleric seems to be...lacking. It is really easy to get your secondary class up though by gathering up and killing alot of monsters that can't hurt you. But anyway, back to the subject.

So I got my crafting up to 11, after doing what seemed like 800 or so runs from the wood fields to the blacksmith completing the 2 cedar shortbow quest over and over again. ( I would harvest as many boards as I could carry, run back, craft 2 bows, hand in, get quest, craft 2, hand in...etc.) This is the quickest way I could find to get past the first 10 levels. Now that the blacksmith doesn't give item quests, I have to craft 35 boards and teleport back to get credit. It's taking forever. Is there a quicker way?

Oh, and when do I get to work with Elm? Oak? (Whatever is next)?

I always found auto-decon'ing exp to be far superior to questing exp (when you make tools/weapons/whatever, just check the "Auto Deconstruct" box on the bottom of the item creation window and then hit "Create").

As for Elm and Oak and whatever else, you get an ability every 20 lvls (1, 20, 40, 60, etc) which will allow you to cut down the next tier of tree - Cedar 1, Elm 20, Oak 40, Maple 60, Yew 80, Thornwood 100. This is the same for every other resource, wether it be metal, stone, fabric, essence, fish, clay or gems.

you get the ability to harvest elm at level 20. Granted, your skills might not be sufficient when you get there, depending on what classes you're working on, but there you go.

(generalist classes like blacksmith, outfitter and scholar get fewer points in a larger number of skills as opposed to the specialist classes which get more points of a narrower set of skills per level)

Now that you've hit the second set of crafting quests, you might have your skills close to the point where you can take advantage of the deconstruction trick.

Simply, get a tool form that your class teaches. You're a blacksmith, so you can pick metal ones, wood ones or stone tools. Find one that you're close to optimal on, and if you aren't quite there, find a spot with a beginner shop that will put you over the threshhold.

Collect a disk full of boards/bricks/bars and make a big batch of whatever tool. Make sure you've checked the deconstruction box. You'll get half of the resources back. Do it again, and again and again until you're out of resources. Then pick up your disk and get more.

This trick allows you to get the most xp from a load of resources. It's pretty boring, and you need to find a spot that has both machines (you won't find these on the training isles)

Also, depending on where you're wanting to go with your crafting, you can bootstrap certain classes by taking others a lot higher.

For example, blacksmith works metal, stone (including processing gems), and wood. Take blacksmith up into the mid 40s range and you're looking at tier 3 resources. Now pick up fitter (metal construction), mason (stone construction) or carpenter (wood construction) and do first processing on resources you collect. That bootstraps the construction classes to the extent that you're quickly able to make and place the construction units at a fairly good or maximum efficiency (most people prefer placing at 3:1 or 2:1 construction units).

It's a matter of finding which base classes (blacksmith, outfitter, scholar, gatherer, miner) fit whichever other class you're wanting. And if you're trying to find a good bootstrap class (or classes) for a certain materials set, feel free to ask around. There are tricks of the trade in every craft.

All these tidbits of advice can just about be freely kicked out the window if you choose to be either a miner or gatherer. With these classes it is most times easier to pick a class that you can quickly get up the next 20 lvls, then swap to the miner or gatherer class and make the next tiered item until you reach that tier you are working on. Continue this process and you should be able to get lvled up relatively quickly. Also in the Miner or Gatherer school it is typically more benificial to do those craft 15 item quests, especially if you are carting around a cargo disk that you can pile full of resources to take to the trainers area and convert. Make the items you can make the best.. not the items you can just barely make.. well for the most part anyway..

Dump question....but what is this cargo disk your talking about?

Edit: Sorry, not to make me sound extremely dumb...but I did see the cargo disk slot, and I did check the Consigner for one, I found all kinds of backpack pouches (which I still can't figure out why anyone would use them)...but no disks.

It can take quite some time to learn the game and how it works the first time around, so just keep asking if you wonder about stuff.
Even the "old timers" where young once and knew little of the world (even if we might have a hard time facing that fact at times...) :)

Cargo Disk:
A device for extra storage that you can drag along or put in one place and fill up (with raw resources, and after refinement, bars, bricks and so on.)


I have the disk trailing along when I first gather resources, filling up the disk and inventory and then go to process it, at which point I detach the disk and fill it with the refined resource(s) and go out and fill up my inventory again and return to process that last load of resources and transfer the made stuff into the disk. (The 'transfer' is done automatically if you are continuing to work with resources that are already in the disk.)
Repeat until you have enough (or disk and inventory full), and then make the items you want to (if there is a suitable 'machine' there, or else drag your disk to the nearest place that have what you need.


Cargo disks comes in several types.
Some that can hold a single type of item/resource and more bulk, and others that can hold several items but a bit less bulk, and yet others that can only be used by Gatherer/Miner.

Dragging it along will go slow, but your storage space is increased, so at times it is well worth it to drag the disk along, and Tarbash (?) disks can also be used through teleports (for a fee), so very handy when doing construction work for instance.

Very handy for every type of crafter, so do your best to get hold of one appropriate for your crafter level.

Tinkerers that can make them, so if no disks are available at a consigner ask in the local Market channel if anyone can make one for you, or do a player search and see if there are any Tinkerers visible (which they seldom are in my experience, but you might get lucky) and ask if he/she can make you one.

As for Backpack pouches, you might not see a need for them yet but I'm sure you will at a later time. They are excellent for making some order in your vault so not all is cluttered about.
1 pouch for tech components, 1 pouch for tools, another for armor and so on. Quite handy. :)

Yea.. sorry I didn't explain what a cargo disk was.. forgot that I was a newb once too, and still feel like a newb sometimes. Cargo disks as well as pouches are very important, also those tinkerers that make those cargo disks.. they also can make cargo gear which also will increase your cargo capacity. Also there are satchels and sacks that will also increase that bulk cargo limit that often plagues players especially new ones. Best thing to do, become friends with your local tinkerer, and try to collect all the things they need to make your cargo stuff, it will most definately put you in better with your local tinkerer as most of them may be too busy to run around collecting the, at least 3, things that you need to make the equipment you want/need.

Awesome. Thanks guys. I recently hooked up with 2 really cool guildmembers of Legendary Alliance. One gifted me with a beginner disk and I'm well on my way past the early teens in Blacksmithing. Though I'm having a hard time with the little green Lore things that you need to buy plans (?...sorry, don't remember the name right now, not in game and my game freaks if I alt-tab alot). The only places I've seen these are on monsters and from completing the crafting quests. Unfortunately the only quest he wants to give me now is craft 35 logs, etc (I haven't checked recently). I don't know about you, but I craft 50-60 per shot, and I'll be damned if I'm gonna run back to the town every time I get 35. If you could complete/get the quest remotely that would be awesome...but I don't think it's gonna happen.

Anyway, back to the question. Besides mobs and quests, do people sell these little green ball things, or do they plan on letting people actually buy the plans at a later point (off the masters/trainers) without the green things at a higher cost of course?

Lore Tokens, as you now know you get for doing tasks for trainers or beeing lucky and get some as loot.

In the beginning it is very slow since you only get a few tokens for you work, which can be very frustrating when you know you need lots of forms.
It does get better as you get higher craft levels since the tasks will give more tokens.

When starting out the best use of your tokens will probably be at the Automatons in Dalimond or New Rachival.
Formulatrons I think they are called (a while since I used them....)
You basically pay 1 token and get a random formula back, which will be appropriate for your level.
Might still get a few you can't scribe immediately, but those you just save until you can scribe them.

Any extras you get, you put up for sale on a consigner for about the price you would have bought it for, since that might actually lead to it beeing sold.
Have seen people putting up Beginner Forms for 500c each and I find that to be about 350-400c too much, at least for someone just starting out their career in Istaria, but that is what I think of the matter...

And of course, you should take a look at the consigners as well and see if you find any needed forms for a decent coin.

For your question about wether people sell Lore Tokens or not:
Yes some do, but the price will most likely be a tad high (at least from my experiences on Unity), so you might want to grind away at the tasks anyway, and visit the consigners from time to time to look for some decent bargains.

I don't think things will change so that you can buy all kind of formulas from trainers with money, but there are some trainers that only accept money for forms.
Fashion Designers (social clothing) and Construction trainers (Mason, Carpenter and so on) comes to mind.

yes.... all the building schools take only coin for forms (weaver, fitter, carpenter, enchanter, and mason) as well as do the Miner and Gatherer trainers. I have actually found that most times it is quite easy (at least on Chaos server) to purchase forms on quite a few of the consignment vendors around. They seem to have quite a regular crowd of people dropping of unwanted/needed forms so that those less fortunate, coin or adventure wise, can get those forms a, sometimes, reasonable price.
