What exactly do they do, other than make abilitys like power shot/strike do more damage? If one mob is in a stance will i do more dammage if i am in a certain stance?

Mobs used to use stances, they no longer do.

Are certain abilities still more effective in the proper stance (as is pointed out in their tooltips) or has that gone the way of the Dodo as well?
they still are, so you can keep whatever you want for a small boost
