Oh yes, I sucked as a tamer for sure in UO.

I was a GMtamer and still my ******** dragon would show me his bottom when told "Monkey follow", make a strange sort of squawk, and go paddling in the lake by the ogre lord island. Needless to say he didn't get out of the stable much.

Now being an elderbard was a different kettle of fish all together...... Mind I had a shock with that when I found I couldn't provoke one red to attack another red. My vision of running riot through Felucca with my tamborine soon became a damp squid. *sighs*

Maybe you forgot to feed him often? Some animals was hopeless really. Early at UO,My smithgot a Frenz Ostard from Jodri(Kushan Sogd) and that Ostard went so crazy so we released it, he retamed it but,it stillrefused to follow orders. I told him that I was satisfied with an ordinary ostard instead as I had my golem too. This was before we got the beetles.

Barding was harder I felt (refering to the girl bard at the comics). I had a bard/T-hunter and when you opent a chest and all hell broke loose, well... oooOOOOoooOOOo, teleport back to chest when monsters had spread out a bit, loot the dead boody of the bard,and start playing the guitar and run around like a crazy chicken. If I had planned that char better I would have turned her into a Tamer/T-hunter instead.
