Does anyone know how many bones are needed or if they are specific to certain level skellies ? I have like 30 bones now and nothing has updated in Quest Journal.

and they are attuned if you loot them
perhaps you should take the quest again?
and pay attention to the dialog for clues?

The quest never updates. The level does not matter just return he will take some of those, save the others I think they can be used for the Undead damage tech you can now quest for now. You will be asked to go and get a diffrent type of bone. Again that one does not update I think but is not many.

I have this quest and forgot who I got it from and what skeleton bones I need to gather.
I havent played for a few weeks and lost my notes
any help in either direction would be appreciated

You need 5 bones. They can be from ANY level skeli. Then go back, talk to the dragon. Then, you will be given the next part of the quest to gather 5 more bones, again from ANY skeli, but are different from the first. They are attuned, only gatherable when you have the quest, and sofar as I know, are not usable for anything other than souvenirs.

just completed this quest:
first, talk to kaliphar in chiconis
next, you need 5 skeleton bones (not blighted) from any level skeleton (the named as well as the regular)
take the skelly bones back to kaliphar - he will cast a spell that will not work (and will turn you into a ghost form - you will retain all scales/equipment, you will just be transparent. do not know if this gives any advantage to low level hatchies, as i am currently almost 59 advent)
he will tell you to collect unblemished bones from any level skeleton (this will take a bit longer than the regs, of course!) - you need 5 of those as well
once you have the 5 unblemished bones, back to kaliphar you go
he casts another spell and you are attuned!
you can't cast a play in hell and expect angels as actors

Actually the "failed" spell turns you into a ghost /hatchling/ no matter if you are hatchling adult or ancient. It also temporarily disables flying if you are normally adult or ancient
Thankfully it only lasts a few (5?) minutes

Yea but it's kinda cool since you're a ghost. BOO! Of course it was more fun a few months ago before everyone had the ghost dragon costumes and/or the candy to power them, hehe.

FYI looks like there are some missing steps here, but as mentioned if you have the correct number of bones the quest will complete.
