Root doesn't work on things that aren't monsters. You can't root resources, even if they have legs.

they should stay still when you're siphoning from them. They usually do for me..

"Non-monster" animals (wisps, deer, etc) won't be affected by any non-damage attack at all. You can toss roots, mezzes, stuns, debuffs, anything you want on them and they'll just go about their business until you kill them.

yes but i dont like to run them away when i want to gather them ^^

so i would need an area spell with 1 damage, but i fear it is not possible

bad that the wisps got changed to 10 hps some years ago

Look what route they take; go stand on that route; and start gathering them just before they arrive on your spot.
Máybe, if unlucky, you will have to do one or two steps then to where they stopped on their route: for you to gather them.
You can also observe till you see where a lot pass by; then go stand on that spot and stop as many passing you by as you can manage to empty (IF no other players are wanting them of course, else share fairly).
I'm sure you will learn to get by nicely, without much running, if you observe first

Lately I've been getting a lot of client/server issues where I get the "You are not close enough to a node to harvest" because the wisp has jumped 20 feet away. According to the client though, it is still at my feet, so even sitting and observing paths does little good for me. Really frustrating when I need 12k of these stupid things and most of my time is spent guessing where they are moving!

Same here, as an adult dragon I've found I have to run till they're almost between my hind legs to harvest them rather than they being closer to my front legs. I'd love for a way to pull them towards me or some how root them so I dont have to strugle and guess where they really are.

i loved wisps when they all got hitpoints like an equal mob

cast tempest, get add, feel little wisp sparks on your scales and gaaather

gather, empty, gather next without moving ^^

but it had been abused, some pulled the wisps to the channeler

get in line with the lil suckers .. select .. then spam the backspace key as they get close.. if you get them they'll stop for you to finish the harvest
