Actually, one of the signs says "PLACE YOU BID", not YOUR BID.

Sadly we've had to let the Sand pygmy go. No, it wasn't cause of his spelling (though that was atrocious). We'd noticed him starting to look long and hard at the hamsters in the other room running the servers. So, we took pre-emptive action and sent him back to his street corner.
You might find him in-game... He's the one carrying the club!

That Sand Pygmy is a little less useless since he stopped giving out sand.
I imagine he often practices his spelling and penmanship in the sand, but adventurers are always killing him mid word. He'll never learn.
