Thread: Nadia Discussion

They exist because people like money. It's a hard fact. Even so, as long as I've been playing this game nothing has ever been handed to me on plate unless a one of my friends forced it down my throat. Fake coin is just another grind. Make money to buy more stuff, to make more money faster... On and on and on.

What's healthier for the game? At this point, I think it's the kindness of the players.

Please do not misunderstand this comment - as the generosity of ther playerbase in Istaria is a large factor in what contributes to me loving this game so much .. BUT ..

In days of yore when Valornyx was hatchling or young adult .. it was customary to "tip" the adults (no ancients back then) who made your scales .. despite you supplying all the resources and comps. No tip = hmm = maybe next time you can make them yourself when you get the extra 30 crafting levels it will take you. (exaggeration for emphasis).

Consequently - the scales actually felt more important to me - I had had to collect the materials for them, but also I needed to make it worthwhile for the other party to help me to bring them into existence. Especially true when one of the few dragons with the V or E techs could be grabbed to make a VVV EEE or variant scale.

I am as much to blame as anyone else in that I do not expect to be compensated for my time when crafting scales or any other items for other players .. in fact have on any number of occassions actually provided a majority of the resources as well .. however ..

I do miss the old days when to have a set of scales made for you felt like a real achievement - as opposed to something that you should expect to happen within 5 minutes of posing a question on Dragon channel.

Similarly, there were (and are still) bipeds that I would drop my current activities to help build spells because they would always make it work your while (tasty hoard items) .. although that was not a requirement of the process.

So although I laud the generosity of the community (myself included in the culprits) - I'd love to see someday somehow a return to days when it was not expected that others will make things gratis and ad infinitem.

I suppose guilds have put us far beyond this now - but I can live in hope I guess.

Edit: The fact that so many are at "endgame" and sit around waiting for something to do to be helpful is another factor I guess.

In reference to the previous post, I often will make Items at no charge and don't expect anything, but get a sour taste when an offer isn't at least made. Such is life.

See, this is a game, and games come with rulesets.

I also love the Istaria community and how things get done / handed for free off one of the various friends etc.

This would be lovely if the game was not made with an economy. For some reason even heavy fantasy games tend to be done on the blueprint of real life.

As such we have a double faced situation:

    - a software made with an economy in mind (else money would just not exist, nor vaults with NPCs selling you shares, Nadia would give reagents for free etc.).

    - a community mostly disregarding the economy model implemented and going their way into a sort of socialistic model.

In a programmer's mind (my job) at this point you have three choices:

    - leave everything as is. The game found its equilibrium somehow, the playerbase likes it and it's also the "easy & cheap" way out. In the long run of course there's to pay the consequences (i.e. inflation, players who liked the "vendor / artisan" game quitting and so on).

    - alter the economy so it conforms and deals with a socialistic model. At this point the game would i.e. implement money vs NPCs like Nadia but i.e. a standings management for players (even if to be honest, in Istaria you tend to know almost everyone).

    - enforce the economy by recoding some game features so that players are forced to trade with money, have money sinks (real ones, not a Nadia to pay 1 of your 100 gold once every 2 months and then remake the 1 gold with 1 drop off 10 minutes of boss farming). This is the hardest to code and harsher on the player base solution. Not sure at this point the developers would want to alienate some players, even if in the long run the game would get some "life" back. Don't forget that the current model supports a tight but very restricted kinship, an economy model forces players to establish relations with "unknowns" thus expanding their circle of friends.
Vahrokh Vain - Ancient dragon level 100 adv 100 craft 34M of untainted, fireworks and other crap free hoard.
Isarion - Reaver Healer Spiritist, many craft classes.
