And therein lies the problem. I was already using grayscale transparent-background PNG files. That's why this confuses me so much. As far as I can tell, there is absolutely nothing in the image (that's visible to me, anyway) that should be telling the game where the old frills are, yet that area gets filled with black.

I even tried copying everything into an entirely blank file just to see if there was some trace of something that was causing it in the original, but I still get the black original frills that shouldn't be there at all.

Thanks for all your help though! I really do appreciate it!

My AGH viewer won't convert the files, Raptress. No matter how hard I try!

Well, yes, but in order to help, I need specifics. x3 Can you get the textures to display within AGH Viewer at all? If so, what happens when you right-click the texture you want to convert, then click Save Selected (or Save Selected As -> Desired File Type)?

I've tried saving it both ways, and yeah the texture displays.

Where does it usually save tho? XD So I can check if it DID save?

It saves to the folder in which AGHViewer is stored.

Their are all types of fins for the dragons, no? So you've got to make one for all of them or just pick one or two?

If I wanted to make a mod that anyone could use on any dragon, I am fairly certain I would have to switch out the back fins on all dragon scale textures for the spikes. It's kind of moot at the moment though, as I never did figure out why I see the black silhouette of the original fins.

My knowledge on Istaria file system is a bit limited, I can provide the art if you want?

I have the art; the problem is it's not playing nicely with the game itself. x3

well if the frills are original alpha textures (which I'm guessing as it's just a plane allong the back of the dragon), the quickest way would be making the membrane part transparent, I don't know how it would react in-game though, only have had 1 year of game-artist so far XD

if you can't get it to work I could try giving it a spin.

    Sorry about that, anyway.

    http://speedy.sh/W38s6/Better-Spikes.exe

Here it is, be warned though, it was only a personal mod, so it might look a bit weird on the other dragon types, also the tooth and claw mod is with it, which has made this possible. Oh yeah I was also able to color the fins between the spikes.
If you wish to modify I've left the files that I made for you guys to play with.

It's a 7zip extractor just run it and extract it to Istaria\resources_override

P.S. Let me know if it works cause I can't test it. :S

Ok didn't know that was going to happen, In the Better Spikes folder remove objects, terrain, water, and effects and that should fix it, besides I didn't know if you had to remove them, so yeah....

Hey, I was wondering if this spike deal was still around. It looked pretty nifty and sadly the .exe link no longer works...

I was sent the .zip file for it recently, so I threw it up on Docs here for you:
    https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B04...ew?usp=sharing

But it only works with sk04 textures, which are the mid-toned reflective thick plates like on this character:
