Default Order Shard World Projects Team Discussions

To assist with the World Projects Team, and to help advertise it's existence, I am trying to assemble the information here on the current World Projects.

For those who do not know, we have a channel, WorldProjects, in game. It is a meeting place for persons willing to work on the current list of projects that are not associated with any particular person, guild, or plot. Rather, these construction jobs are for the community as a whole and are found across the empire. Past completed projects include the Elmnic logging camp, the Garnet Bay gemworking hut, North Dalimond Ridge essence circle (my error. Sanctuary Bay is much further west of this than I remembered), Copperton's second smelter (further downhill and has both smelter and anvil), and others.

Builders (those having construction classes), runners (persons who may or may notcraft particular resources but who give of their time to take resources from the field toplace on projects)and resource processors (those not having construction classes, but having the skills to process resources) are all appreciated and welcome.

Now, why do we bring this to the public? In the past, we have kept in the background of activity, taking on projects for the community only to announce their completion. However, we are finding more projects to be undertaken and fewer persons to assist in this. One suggestion has been to bring the team to the public eye. That is the reason for this forum.

Over the next two weeks, the team plans on re-examining all the projects and providing an update on the status of each. If anyone wishes to assist with this resurveying, please send a reply here or join us in the WorldProjects (space intentionally left out) channel. First off, let us work up a list of projects in process and what is remaining to be done. I suggest the following format for this:

Project Name: (example Elmnic logging camp)
Location: (either coordinates or good description of how to get there. example Elmnic, road southwest, first turn left)
    Resources:
(listing resources: how many are complete/how many total. example Sandstone blocks: 37/500 where 37 is the number of units completed already and 500 is the total number of units for that particular construction unit)

Many thanks to those who volunteered for the World Projects team and I invite all builders, runners, and processors to join the WorldProjects channel to make our Istaria better for the general populace.

Ok, here is the list as compiled by resurveying the World Projects as of 6/17/05. Those in red have been recommended by various members of the team as being absolutely lowest priority due to danger of travel there or no resources for that structure in the area. As more recommendations are made, I will mark these appropriately. I do wish to thank all who volunteered to run/fly to these spots and resurvey them for this report. This would have taken much more time than the scant 7 hours it did without their aid. If anyone has any more world projects to be added or updates to the structures listed here, please reply to this post.

I am severely disappointed in all of you for taking from newcomers to these lands any chance they had at working on a project like this.

I therefore propose a new "nerf" that crafters who do not gain experience from world projects may not apply resources.

    Shameful.

Wow, I can't believe you just said that. You realize that almost all of the world projects require nothing above Tier II Resources? Or did you fail to find out this information before you came in here "Beating on" C'gan and his team? Nobody above level 65 would get xp on those projects!

Newcomers to this land had every oppertunity to help on the projects. And odds are the projects would have never gotten done if left up to them. So before you start calling community involvement shameful step back and look at the long term picture. If the mine hadn't been completed hastily, new crafters wouldn't have had anywhere to gather Tier I Gems. So Brassandyn next time collect your information a bit better before you start pointing fingers and calling the team shameful hmm?

Uhh, dude, get a clue. Here's a few facts for your flames:

    1. Most of these projects have been around for MANY MONTHS, and will be around for several more months. Let alone that they will be putting more in as time goes on.
    2. Many of those who are working on these projects ARE "newcomers" or low-level characters.
    3. Very few of the "world projects" have ever required much beyond Tier 2 construction.
    4. There are MANY MANY opportunities for "newbie construction" workers to build stuff all over the world on PLAYER-owned plots, let alone World Projects.
    5. They can even get PAID for working on the former, whereas they don't get jack squack for the latter.

So, before you go swinging that shame shroud around, learn about what and who you are talking about first. Otherwise, you might find it tailor-made for your own back.

    Brassandyn,
We share a common worry. You are obviously much more vocal about it than I am. There's a few reasons that I don't really show that worry.
    1. I sit in the New Player channel along with the members and leaders of our Greater New Player Assistance Team. I've seen both Asteral and Frisco talk to new players and encourage them to get involved in the World Projects Team.
    2. Introducing New Players to construction through something as large as a World Project, could be much more frustrating and unrewarding, than if we instead help them find plots where tier I work is being paid and can be completed in a shorter period time, they are more likely to take an interest in future construction projects.
    3. I'm not an official member any team. I simply support them all. I trust the leaders, and that trust has been more than justified by the wonderful results I've seen in the last week.

You obviously have strong feelings about the community, and that is never a bad thing. I'd like to encourage you to become a member of one our existing teams, or at the very least, attend the next community meeting June 30,2005 at 8pm Eastern in the Tazoon Arena.
You can contact me in game if there's something you wish to have added to the agenda. I hope to see you more involved in the community.

Obviously, I didn't expect any of you to agree with me, because you don't know where I'm coming from (besides the Spirit server, premerge).

I'm no newcomer to this world, having started in December of 2003 along with many or you. I have worked on the Satyr island mine project, the Feladan project, and the Falathien Bridge and Lerena Bridge projects as a runner, gatherer, placer ... you name it. Me and my small guild at the time built more than 90 percent of the artifact of magic near Meadowhill on Spirit before anyone else noticed we were nearly finished.

It's not about getting the projects done. There are always things to build.

But this is a new situation, and Tulga is trying to bring new people into the game with a revamped Lesser Aradoth and many changes for newer players. By swooping in an robbing these potential (yes, potential ... they may not even have signed up yet) newcomers to Istaria of projects they can only hear tales of what went before. They've already missed the mines, the liberation of the dryads, the other major world construction projects. What the heck, I guess they should miss these as well.

Sometimes us old folks are our own worst enemies when it comes to keeping new people around. You may think you are doing newcomers a favor sometimes, but often times you are confusing them and making them feel helpless.

"Look! I built your mine for you! Aren't you happy?"

Sorry, but I don't buy it. There are tons of plots around with scaffolding ... you want to make Istaria beautiful, go finish them. In fact, with the "new" reclamation system, the buidings won't go away so you'll be helping if you finish Joe Blow's vault or Mary Lou's journeyman Cantina, even though Joe and Mary have long since left for distant worlds.

As for the newcomers, encourage them, form them into teams and do some gathering and running for them, show them the value of the projects, but don't do their work for them.

    Brassandyn,
I regret that you are unable to express yourself in a much less aggressive manner that this. I'll try to be as personable as possible, but there's certain things that I feel are necessary to bring to your attention.
    1. You come from the Spirit Shard, as do I. You then are probably well aware of the amount of community effort that took place on that shard. One with the lowest population was one of the first to finish the Novo.
    2. You have been invited to constructively participate in the current community, but your tone seems to suggest that you'd rather pit yourself against it.
    3. It seems phenominally hypocritical to rag on our World Projects Team, with a comment in your last post like, "Me and my [sic] small guild at the time built more than 90 percent of the artifact of magic near Meadowhill...before anyone else noticed we were nearly finished." This is not community oriented, and you should not be shocked to find yourself pitted against the community.
    4. As was mentioned, the New Player Assistance Team is directing new players to assist in these projects and the new players are receiving better help and assistance than Tulga could hope for. They're getting it from some of the same players that you're choosing to rag on.

That being said, all I'll add is these two things:
Read with the intent that people are on your side before you assume otherwise. Dispite having to be this blunt, I still extend the same invitation I did earlier. You are welcome to constructively participate in this community. No one can deny you that right.

Talk to the people responsible for what you feel is an injustice to be assured that you have the facts before you go posting flames here. In this case, that would be C'gan, the team leader for World Projects and Asteral or Frisco, the co-leaders for the New Player Assistance Team.

I hate my title and regret using it, but hopefully it will explain why I am so defensive of this team. I stand behind the Team Leads 100%. The community voted them in. Whether or not you choose to be a part of that community, is on you.

    Sincerely,

    Plink

I know where you are coming from, and I find it an untenable position; a strawman at best.

The projects that the devs put into the world are for EVERYONE, not just newbies, not just old-timers. No specific group has any claim whatsoever on the projects. I can go and work on them any time I want; by myself, or in a group.

Our guild also built a significant portion of the Meadowhill artifact on Dawn. I have worked on every major project up until the most recent ones as well.

Tulga isn't going to stop putting stuff into the game for people to build. Plus, as much as you point to the player plots for advanced crafters, I point to them being a very good place for new construction crafters to work AS WELL AS the projects. I am not aching to go and do T1/2/3 construction with T5 in all construction skills. I do sandstone/bronze/dim/cedar/flax grudgingly, and usually only for the guild. Why? Because it is a good starting place for, umm, NEW PLAYERS.

There are 20-odd projects on Order unfinished now. It will be MONTHS before what we have now will be complete. New players will have AMPLE time to participate. In the meantime, Tulga has plans to add more and more projects as time goes on. No New Players will "miss out" on the opportunity to build something.

If you don't wanna work on them, then don't. Your choice. Nothing you have said or will say is going to change my mind about my working on them. That's my choice.

Anyway, I feel like I am arguing with a wall here, so I'll quit while I am behind.

Ok everyone, take 2 steps back, lots of deep breaths, and count to at least 200.

Both sides deeply care about our shard and have some valid points.

I've been there, last year as a new player, wishing I could be involved with a World Project, but knowing I wasn't usually in-game when a group was working on such and by myself I'd just get continuely slaughtered. So I didn't get involved and was a bit dissappointed. The new LA projects would of been ones I would of been able to help with, if they had been available last year. (I was also proud on one hand but dissappointed on the other that Meadowhill's Artifact got built so fast. I didn't get a chance to help much on that one either.)

On the other hand, unless you are able to kill the gem golems, the source of most, if not all (I haven't prowled every inch of the new LA yet), the Tier 1 gems have dried up until those mines can be built. So getting the mines built will help the new players.

Also the lovely Saris Lady, wouldn't really talk to me, so she maybe won't hand out quests until she was happily in her own home. Getting her house built might also been fairly important to the new players.
But as far as I know, the new lighthouse is just fluff (cool fluff) and if it is not already finished, maybe the more advanced members of World Projects can step back from that one for a while. Give the low level builders a chance to complete it on their own. Afterall, the South Selen bridge still needs to be finished (I think) and so do lots of other forgotten, out of the way projects (such as Fabric Isle's fabric shop). If it hasn't gotten done by the end of August, then it will be pretty obvious that some high level help is needed.

And since Carmo is pretty much finally built, I'll have a little more free time to help build around our world too. So C'gan, occasionally I'll be asking you if I'm needed for anything.

I appreciate yourpost, but think you're still missing a serious point:

The new players ARE getting involved in the World Projects. The New Player Assistance Team is sending them over there.

There will always be projects to be worked on, and things are set up to allow New Players to assist, while still providing the needed services in a timely manner.

C`gan is doing a wonderful job of balancing that.

    My original point also stands:

If you disagree with something the community is doing, then the constructive thing to do is get involved in the community by participating in the teams or by attending community meetings, or both.

There's also a third option that was offered and ignored. Any member of the community is welcome to talk to me online, or send me an email if they have an issue.

Attacking the work of team, in my opinion, is no different than personally attacking the members of that team. It has no place in this community

I've been asked to stay out of this, but I fear I cannot. I would like to make a few points clear about the World Projects Team that have somehow been missed.

I gave this explanation at the beginning of the thread. I wish to emphasize it. The World Projects Team works on projects that ARE NOT associated with any particular person, guild, or plot. Inasmuch as I would LOVE to take up the construction around Istaria, sweep every town of scaffolding, and get all the plots completed, I cannot in good conscience ask the team to do this.

This team was actually set up as you see it today by teams that were created pre-merge for the exact same tasks on all the shards, the construction of the machinery to free Feladan, the Novian machinery in Bristugo, the magic artifacts, the tunnel, the satyr mines, etc.. The team leaders since merge have kept to this stance because of some sound foresight. We do not work on individual plots so there is no complaint of favoritism amongst the community (You worked on XXX guild's plots, but you're not working on YYY's?). The one and ONLY one exception to that rule that I know of was when we built the woodworking shop in Genevia on Kaaii's plot. She had donated it to the World Projects team and to the Istarian community because at the time, the logging camp south of Cedar's Cove did not have the machinery to use the processed goods. Her plot was strategically placed near the southern cedar field with easy access by both Cedar's Cove and Genevia pads, as well as the Genevia portal to Bristugo. We did not build the consigner, pawnbroker, or silos on her plot, either.

    You stated the following:

I will offer again my response from the very first post in this thread:

Now, why do we bring this to the public? In the past, we have kept in the background of activity, taking on projects for the community only to announce their completion. However, we are finding more projects to be undertaken and fewer persons to assist in this. One suggestion has been to bring the team to the public eye. That is the reason for this forum.

    >snip<

Many thanks to those who volunteered for the World Projects team and I invite all builders, runners, and processors to join the WorldProjects channel to make our Istaria better for the general populace.
Who do I leave out? Who am I NOT inviting to this? I honestly don't know. Anyone who has any time to process raw resources, make construction units, run, or place is invited to the channel and to the work. The only ones who have not been directly invited have been adventurers only. Even they in the past have been requested to lend aid by providing a safe run to the runners. Unfortunately, the current projects (with the exception of the two deemed low priority) have no attacking beasties, so we do not need their combat skills. We certainly appreciate their donated time to run for and/or with us for protection and resource carrying, though.

I will re-quote with emphasis a sentence that I would particularly like to have everyone keep in mind:

And here is another quote to keep in mind, from the thread on Team Channels.

Any and all help by the community is greatly needed and appreciated. I postedtwenty-three projects at the beginning of this thread. Two are complete. At least four of them that I count have been around since merge, though they are lower priority since they only beautify Grayling, but nonetheless to be completed. I have had team members request priority be assigned to projects so they knew which to progress. I gave them suggestions and approval for moving forward as they have. However, I still want to state for the record that the priority of the remaining projects on the list I would like community input on during the next meeting in three days. If the community wants the team to cease and desist before then on projects, please start up a thread here, separate from this one, please, and say so and/or say so in the WorldProjects channel.

Many thanks to those who volunteered for the World Projects team and I invite all builders, runners, and processors to join the WorldProjects channel to make our Istaria better for the general populace.

    Well, my 2.718 cents...
What needs to be done is to have a World Project that uses tier 4 and 5 resources, but till that happens, I think the point that Brassandyn was trying to make (or maybe I'm just projecting my own viewpoint) is that those of us who gain xp as well as pleasure from this sort of thing don't have a huge chance to do so. My own little example... I logged in one night not long ago, saw there was a team working on the Saris Manor House, and pitched in a bit, feeding sandstone to the masons. It was late at night, work the next morning, that whole deal. I looked at the structure, saw there were 400 units or so left to build, so I logged out assuming that I could work on it tomorrow. I logged in the next afternoon and the house was *done*.

This is not a bad thing... obviously the cooperation within the community and the pride we take in our work are not in doubt. It was just a little disappointing to log in and not have the chance to do what I had been looking forward to all day because somebody (who admittedly has just as much right as I to work on it!) had blazed through it. I have a retired higher-level builder... I'm sure I've been guilty of this sin myself in the past, so I better not go pointing any fingers! Nor do I want to dampen anyone's enthusiasm for building; I certainly don't plan to curtail my construction fun when my levels get higher. True, all the New Players get a chance to work on world projects, but to be completely honest, how much of a chance is it? Can it be greater without robbing the higher levels of their right to play?

I'm not going to pretend to have a solution that will make the problem magically go away (outside of a T1-5 project, which is in TG's hands), especially as I have no desire to call fiery wrath down upon my poor feeble self. But, if it's not already on the agenda I think this is something that should be discussed at the upcoming meeting, to see if we can put our heads together and come up with something resembling a good compromise.
