Another forced hiatus.

Franken'puter seems to have had a mental breakdown.

Explorer hangs... a lot...

New power supply unit. Still hangs.

New video card. Still hangs.

New HDD and fresh OS install. Still hangs.

I seem to be the inheritor of more complicated computer errors as time progresses.

What now? New motherboard? New CPU? New OS?

Terrible, I don't know, at the stage you describe the only thing that comes to mind is kick it, hard, and yell (at it). Not very constructive, I'm sorry.

I've already done the cussing bit, the throwing stuff bit, the sweeping junk off the table bit so I can work on it...

The only thing left is taking it out back and shooting it... but that may be the extreme....

I think it's been nearly two weeks without my fix.

Anyway, a friend pointed me to a rootkit revealer and I found all kinds of junk in my system.

Five hundred ten discrepancies. The horror!!

I may have a functional computer again, but I'll have to reconnect it to the 'net to be certain. And check it's long-term functionality.

And threaten it with my rifle!!

Or, maybe shake my sword at it.

Hope that works for ya, Ver! If not, have you checked your comp's memory? Sometimes a bad spot in a memory stick can cause some really strange things to happen.

Yep, matched pair of mem sticks checked out fine.

As I said, I seemed to have picked up a lot of little omissions or mismatches and it seriously messed with Explorer's stability.

Went to technet.microsoft.com and d/l'd a rootkit revealer and it found a lot of little errors and then *gasp* fixed them!

I booted the beast this morning and found only 2 things that are, surprisingly, supposed to be on WinXP 32-bit, and then went as fast as possible to updating Explorer 6 to 8, and it seems stable ever since. >_<

I think the new build will have Windows 7, but as long as this animal will play Horizons, I'm here until the magic smoke escapes.

The hardware refuses to acknowledge the presence of a sound driver too.
