Is there a good place to download the game?

Alright, I haven't been around in a few months, due to a long disasterous move. I've just recently had to reformat my computer and start over (again), and I just got the internet working again.

I'm very anxious to pay my subscription fees and get back, but I'm having problems with the download. I've tried the "Free Trial" download to get the game back on my PC, but both links bring me to a page that says: Can't write to log file! Please Change the file permissions (CHMOD to 666 on UNIX machines!)

Is there still someplace out there that I can download from, or is that error screen just me?

Ah hah! I figured out what went wrong, and the broken link needs to be fixed anyway I suppose. The free trial will download the program if you click the right link. If you go to http://www.istaria.com/ and you want to download the game, you don't click on the giant dryad image that says "Get The Free Trial Now" as those download links are not working and bring up the "Can't write to log file! Please Change the file permissions (CHMOD to 666 on UNIX machines!)" page.

However, if you click the 'Free Trial' link under the Downloads section of the menu to the left, it will take you to a page where the links work.

Confused the heck out of me, so it may confuse possible new players. Might want to get the link repaired soon.

And thanks for the responses, I was going to try File Planet if this didn't work.

Yes I've been able to replicate this fault. The giant Dryad picture on the right and the Free Trial button on the left link to different pages.

The giant dryad picture links to http://www.istaria.com/trial.php , and neither the torrent of http download options work.

The left-hand link goes to http://community.istaria.com/pg.php/download . Both the torrent and http options work.

Just needs a tweak to make it work properly. *pokes webmaster*

Wasn't there a third option where you could download the patcher which would then download the game files? I was looking for it, but I can't seem to find it anymore.

Yeah, there was one. You're not going insane!

I think it got pulled because it was a very suboptimal (read: takes a lot longer than grabbing the 1GB install and patching) way to install the game.

If you still want to take that route, you can import the registry keys that tell the patcher where the game is (will be) installed, make the base Horizons directory in the place described in the registry key, and launch from the website. The first launch attempt will crash the patcher, though the second attempt should trigger a full scan and a very long patch. This takes about 8-14 hours on a connection that can do 150KB/s downstream. I might have a .reg file somewhere with the necessary keys. Let me know if you can't find one.

This is *very* unsupported and you should try to fetch the 1GB download instead. You'll generate *less* traffic grabbing the installer, rather than having the patcher download the game.

If you're having trouble downloading the 1GB file because of an unstable connection, there are ways to resume downloads. My favorite is using a command line utility called "wget.exe", also useful for saving any url to disk, mirroring websites and accidentally snarfing down hard-disk sized chunks of the internet.

If you've got an existing installation of Istaria on another machine on your local network, you can copy the {Artifact Entertainment | Tulga Games | Virtrium} folder to the destination machine and import the necessary registry keys. This should take about 20-40 minutes on a 100Mb/s LAN.

If you just want to download the client... I just used GetRight and the http download. Downloaded in about 2 hours capped by my connection speed.
