Ever since Takora posted those screenies of the maddened rabid Arbotus squirrels in the Easter Eggs thread, I've been wondering...

What put the squirrels there? Why do they fight for the Arbotus? Are they under some sort of spell (since they thank you for killing the arbotus and freeing them)? What purpose do the squirrels serve?
