According to the AMD site on your Athlon XP 3000+, that CPU is a Socket A CPU. The motherboard you linked I found info on here and it says it is a Socket AM2/AM2+. I believe the CPU is a couple of years old, is that correct?

The socket refers to the connection between the CPU and motherboard. The easy description - your foot (CPU) is the wrong size for your shoe (motherboard). And you can't wear extra socks to make the shoe fit

So from what I am reading, your CPU is not compatible with that motherboard. To be certain, contact the supplier directly. They will be able to tell you.

I use the Crucial memory adviser for RAM purchase decisions. You don't need to buy from them - just find out what RAM you need for your motherboard of choice.

Sounds like you just want a motherboard upgrade, but if you want a cheap (depending on your definition of cheap!) complete-system upgrade then I'd suggest checking out Toms Hardware, they have their "best build" pages dedicated to budget, performance, and extreme upgrade PCs. I based my system on their "Enthusiast PC" and am - quite enthusiastic about the results The plus side is you know exactly what to expect from performance, everything "just works".

    Hi Hellenia

    I had that same problem.
Some 1,5-2 year ago the production on Socket A Mainboards stopped.
Here in Germany the only available Mainboard for that type of CPU is the:

    ASRock K7S41GX

I think its the same in the USA, try to find that, it works with the DDR RAM and the old CPU.
Or try ebay. ( maybe you have more luck with a sellers-shop in there)

Next option is a complete new Set of CPU, Mainboard and RAM (+Graphic Card).
= more money + more performance

    Hellenia,

The 3000+ is a bit old and is single-core I believe. If you have a little cash, I'd recommend a full upgrade.

For example, you can get a triple core Phenom CPU for $67 here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103252

While a Phenom X3 isn't the top of the line (Phenom II is), it is still quite fast. My wife has a triple-core Phenom in her computer and it runs great.

A motherboard for $39.99 that has generally good ratings (81% at 4-star or better): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813186155

The motherboard comes with an onboard GeForce 6100, audio and LAN/Ethernet. So you are set there.

You might need some RAM and if so the motherboard can support up to 4GB of DDR2 1066 which can be found here for $85.99 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231122) or if you don't want the full 4 GB you could go with 2 GB for $49.99 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231098).

Anyway, just figured I'd help out. Newegg.com is a really great site for computer parts. Quite a few people I know (as well as myself) have used them for many years (myself over 10 years now) and the only trouble I've ever had is with specific components and they are quick to replace them and send new parts or issue refunds.

So with those links you'd be looking at a full system upgrade for between $157 and $193 before tax and shipping. Not bad! Good luck with your upgrades!
