Whenever I've been asked the question "What are your favorite movies?" in conversation, I've always found it better to ask "In which genre?" I have so many favorite movies that I break them down into categories because, to me, it's simply impossible to compare, say, a western to a science-fiction movie. It's comparing apples to oranges. That said, here are my top five favorite movies (in no particular order) in each category:

    Fantasy

    Lord of the Rings Trilogy
    The Neverending Story
    Willow
    Princess Bride
    Conan the Barbarian
    Wizards

    Science Fiction

    Blade Runner
    Star Wars: A New Hope
Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
Alien (actually a horror movie, but in a sci-fi setting)
Close Encounters of the Third Kind

    Comedy

    Animal House
    Airplane
    Dogma
    Young Frankenstein
    Zorro, the Gay Blade

    Western

    The Searchers
    Unforgiven
    Stagecoach (the original)
    Silverado
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

    Horror

The Changeling (scariest ghost story I've ever seen)
    Halloween (the original)
    The Fog
    Blair Witch Project
    Sixth Sense

    Crime

    The Godfather Part I
    The Godfather Part II
    Goodfellas
    Casino
    Donnie Brasco

    Romance

    Casablanca
    Dr. Zhivago
    Gone with the Wind
    It Happened One Night
    Pretty Woman

    Action/Adventure

    Raiders of the Lost Ark
    The Mummy (modern version)
    Hellboy
    Swashbuckler
    Pirates of the Carribean

    War

    Apocalypse Now
    Saving Private Ryan
    The Longest Day
    Bridge on the River Kwai
    Full Metal Jacket

    Children

    Candleshoe
    Mary Poppins
    Shrek I
    Shrek II
    The Lion King

    Musical

    The Music Man
    Paint Your Wagon
    Moulin Rouge
    My Fair Lady
    Meet Me in St. Louis

OMG! *smacks self* Talking to someone in game last night just made me realize I TOTALLY spaced on putting in my all time fave movie ever!

    The Princess Bride!

    Favorite line/scene:

    Inigo: Who are you?
    Roberts: No one of consequence.
    Inigo: I must know.
    Roberts: Get use to disappointment.
    Inigo: *shrugs and whispers* K.

    And in the runner-up category . . . .

"My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."

"Don't you know you NEVER get into a game of wits with a Sicilian when death is on the line, or a land war in Southeast Asia?"

"Every night when I helped the Dread Pirate Roberts dress for bed he would say to me: 'You're doing a terrific job. I'll probably kill you in the morning."

    Ah, great movie that . . . .

If Snowdonia smacks herself again, I'm afraid I'll have to lock this thread.

That does qualify as verbal abuse, doesn't it? [;)]

Being much, much older than everyone else here (8 grandkids), my favorite movie of all time starred Gary Cooper &Grace Kelly: High Noon. (I was still in cloth diapers when it was released, though.)
Then Disney's original Fantasia, from way before the word psychedelic was invented.
&Easy Rider and Blazing Saddles tied for 3rd place.
LoTR would have been my favourite, but they just cut out too much from the book.
