Salvage Awl

Anyone has an insight on what's this used for? I don't have a clue...

For the salvaging skill. Now, my memory's a bit hazy about this, but I think the only time you need to equip it is when you deconstruct items you don't have the proper crafting skill for. So, when you have a sword to decon but no weaponsmithing skill, you'll equip the awl and use salvaging to decon.

That, or I'm talking bull. [:D] The other use for an awl is to equip a training awl to limit your salvaging skill to 50. That way, your real crafting skill will be higher than salvaging and will be used for deconstruction, awarding you the decon experience. Else, if you had the misfortune to have high salvaging (higher than your craft skill), you'd need to switch to tinkerer or whatever other class awards the skill every single time you decon, to get the experience.
