Yeah, twice. Once from the original Horizons CDs and once from the download from the website. Neither made things any different.

Well, I found the setting in the file. I fixed things by setting all instances of this preference:

float charTextureLODdist = 30.0

It's too bad that the same setting in the graphics prefs file...
