    First: Today is Maintenance day on Unity. The Server will not be up before about 11:30 to 12:30 CET.

    You said after the loading screen nothing happens, so the game itself is at least starting?

    And are you sure you are logged into the EU page (blue) and not the NA page (brown)?

    yup i'm starting from the EU page, and i've tried to loggin since yesterday (when the maintenance message was not showing up).
    It really seems that HZ won't run on my machine.... i can't find any explanation to this problem (the audio and video drivers are updated corectly).

    i tried to read the log file (that is like reverse-chinese to me...)
    i've found this line =

    ~~~@>-+-~~~
    The ACCESS_VIOLATION hits! The ACCESS_VIOLATION hits! You die.
    c0000005h (ACCESS_VIOLATION)
    The thread tried to read from the virtual address 0x00000000 for which it does not have the appropriate access.
    You died in...
    maybe that's where the trouble is.... but i really dunno what that means
    Default bah...
    Hi folks - another (attempted) return player here. Can't say it's an encouraging start...
    Have tried to both install from my original disk and play from the download, but hang when it tries to patch. I sent the following to support, but I hear they're not much cop - no reply yet:
    "I have tried to download the game several times, and also tried to install from my original discs, but each time I try to log in I get this message:
    Sorry, the game could not be started since necassary files could not be downloaded. The reason: Couldn't download no_update_list.auc
    Please advise."
    I've read of an old workaround on the eu messageboard (involving changing a driver folder file to add the US patcher address), tried it and it didn't work. Anyone got any other bright ideas? Thanks for your time - hope to see you in game soon
    Are you using Windows 98/95/ME?
    Ok, then the fix you mentioned above works. You must have misread the instructions somewhere.
    Thanks for your replies
    The instructons were pretty simple (even for me!) and when I cut and pasted it in it looked exactly like the example shown. Tried both the log in methods and it still doesn't work. Can't the updates be dowloaded seperately from somewhere?
    The worst thing is I was really looking forward to coming back, but the EU server seems to be in such a mess its really putting me off again. If I hadn't put so much work into my character I would just start again on the US server, but the thought of chopping down all those trees again for my plot is too much to bear!
    This is really getting me down
    As a footnote, this is how that file looks now - if I've done something dumb, let me know!
    # Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
    #
    # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
    #
    # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
    # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
    # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
    # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
    # space.
    #
    # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
    # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
    # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
    Yes, make sure it's saved as "hosts" and not "hosts.txt" as Notepad is prone to do. You might have to set the read-only property on the hosts file off (right-click the file for properties.)
    Also, though this might be a result from pasting it into a post, but the space between the IP and patch.eu.etc should be a tab. This may or may not affect the function of the file, but it's better to be safe than sorry.
    One thing you can do to see if the bypass works is this:
    Open your Start menu and click Run (or equivalent in whatever language your Windows is.)
    In the dialog that appears type "cmd" (without quotes) and press enter.
    In the window that appears type "ping patch.eu.istaria.com" and hit enter. If it tells you it's trying to ping 68.142.64.216, you succeeded. If it's trying to ping 213.198.85.1 you did something wrong.
    (The pings themselves will time out, this is normal.)
    I did this and it pinged (I love that word) 68.142.64.216 so I guess I succeeded, although I still can't access the patcher. Any other ideas?
