We bought a new PC too. The intention was, that husband Flameus and me could play together. It does not work Vista
Lucky me- I can play with my old one (uhmm PC I mean^^). And I will not share rare online-time with him. He and a friend are still trying to get HZ goin`with Vista.
If I knew how to- I would atomize it ^^
All the best to you, Balthizar- Still hoping to see you some day
Why not install XP and Vista on 1 PC ? ;-)
XP for Horizons and Vista for other things ^^
In all honesty, there comes a time when a professional product needs to be compatible with the current operating system; and that time has passed, Vista has been released for more than long enough.
AA0, there are times when the current OS should be scrapped entirely. As my housemate found out, Vista is not even compatible with it's OWN updates on Microsoft's site.
Here's the story: A friend got a Vista laptop. It was fluky from the start just with the base OS. Took it to Window's update site, ran the update, none found. Still ran fluky. Did a reformat and reinstall. No luck. Back to update, all updates are currently installed. Checked the site for video and sound drivers. Both listed newer drivers than what was currently on the laptop. Tried downloading from their sites. Wouldn't install. Checked windows site on an XP computer, new drivers were listed for putting in Vista. Put laptop back to update. No updates.
In the end, we just RMA'd the laptop.

I've found that most of the Mmorpg's i play have all had to have numerous downloads to get them to work with Vista.
A major problem is Vista uses Dx 10 but the OS was so secret while being done that most developers now have to backwards write Vista to make them compatible.
As a dis-gruntled microsoft employee said "Do you honestly think microsoft care wether their OS works or not?"
Just takes time, and yes you can play Horizons using Vista, somebody wil write down how they did it soon.
It's almost impossible that you run an update on a newly acquired computer and you won't find updates, they release stuff all the time including the malware detection updates. Here's the story: A friend got a Vista laptop. It was fluky from the start just with the base OS. Took it to Window's update site, ran the update, none found. Still ran fluky. Did a reformat and reinstall. No luck. For what I read, it's a crappy laptop not "just" installed off its original CDs (else you'd have found Vista updates for sure) but tweaked already.
The whole story smells like you could have had the same issues when passing from Win 95 to XP.
Most alive MMOs would run in DX 9 and in Vista would still run well enough.
Sources of issues are MMOs using older DX, older network code, and most of all old sound code. Expecially "top" MMOs using some Creative Labs top audio cards hardware to achieve some particular effects had to rework that part since Vista did not provide an easy support of that.
But don't think it's all so "high level". Most software that stopped working on Vista is due because the software had bugs. Most often, a software whose erratic behavior would not be detected in former Windows (earning it its bad name in matters of security, as those "erratic behaviors" going unchecked were a nicely exploitable security hole.) is halted by Vista relentlessy.
Horizons is a first case of this (have to see if it's because of simple bugs or just "shortsighted" usage of some Windows APIs), WoW too has its share (to the point that vanilla WoW has _less_ issues running in Vista than the 2007 released TBC expansion...).
I actually feel better that Vista halts every suspect attempt at accessing protected memory and validates system calls more strictly, I prefer dropping a software than having everything compromised due to the old security holes being all here.

the latest expansion for EQ2 (Kunark) requires you right click on the EQ2 icon, and run as adminstrator or it won't install.
also, whenever you actually run it, you have to "run as administrator" - you can't just use the icon normally as previously.
Looks like HZ is not the only MMO to have issues with Vista.
Thankfully I still use XP Pro, it's my hubby that has the problems (and we bought a laptop 3 weeks ago I insisted on XP as the OS )

It's easy to run Horizons on Linux.
EDIT: Actually, there are a couple of tiny issues I encountered that that page doesn't mention. Maybe I'll post a how-to.
just drop Vista already - nothing requires it as of yet, and it's no good until a service pack or two...
