Detached disk and item creation

It seems there is a distance at which the contents of the disk show in the item creation window as available, but infact are not, I found it rather confusing.

Seems to depend on where you try and open your disk at, if you open it too far away, it won't be available even if you run back in range. If you open it close to the disk, you can run away and back and it will still be usable. Though at least it doesn't allow opening it, running away and being able to use it while far away.
