I have to say something. This article and the fact that they exist and that they wont do anything about it make my stomach churn and twist and ARRG! I'm so angry. They need to fix this problem. They need to get like 100 volunteers and go out there and fish the garbage out. It may take awhile, they may not get all of it but at least some wild life will be saved. I tell you If they had volunteers i would sign up like...in a heartbeat my stomach is hurting so bad from this. It needs to be stopped. Obama needs to have some kind of action taken for this. This cant be tolerated. Follow the following link. I will be setting up a petition soon to save the world from this horror. Help save our oceans from this menace.

I fully agree that this is disgusting, but I think you are somewhat underestimating the problem. The worst damage is not the large pieces of plastic that we see photographed (though they are indeed dangerous to sea life), but the tiny bits of plastic that all of this trash turns into. The amount of plakton-sized plastic bits in some areas of the ocean outnumber the actual number of plankton! Consider that the smallest ocean creatures eat zooplankton, which are in turn eaten by larger creatures yet, and so on, till it ends up in vastly concentrated amounts in sea creatures, (including the ones we eat).

There have been estimates that to clean it all up would cost more than any country could budget, and kill huge amounts of sea life.

The best thing we can do is start at home- carefully consider how you consume, purchase, and throw away. Plastics are not as easy to recycle as we think (sure we toss bottles and such in the bin, but what about packaging, etc) and recycling alone will not help.
If you want to petition, start petitioning plastic throw-aways.
