Yeah ive basically formatted and reinstalled windows done all updates and java/flashplayer and once it searches for the patches you usually get that box saying initialising engine/sound support etc i dont even see it not even any processes in task manager. What can be the cause of this?

You might need to install DirectX, if it's a windows 7 install.
First, be sure you are on Service Pack 1 for windows 7 ( https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down...s.aspx?id=5842 ).
The Platform update is needed to get the latest Dx for Windows 7. This is normally installed when you do all of the windows updates:

DirectX June 2010 for Windows 7:
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down...s.aspx?id=8109

On windows 10, you will get a one time popup asking to install a component of DirectPlay I think it was, works fine after accepting it. Make sure the popup isn't behind another window.

Try that let us know what happens.

Not showing up there shouldn't really matter. Some old software doesn't add itself there. (Edit, checked my own pc and it's not listed in add/remove either. But my install is really old, from the original cd.)

But since you mentioned sound, is it possible you need set/change your default audio device? Check by going to Control Panel - Sound. Make sure the correct device is default. Also, you might not have sound drivers installed at all since you did a fresh install. Or if you do have sound, windows might have used a generic audio driver that doesn't have full capability. If the soundcard is built into the motherboard, you can download it from the motherboard manufacturer. If the pc is something like an hp or dell, can download it from them.

Well when I patch to blight I lose my d3dx9 file from my computer. For people that don't know that is a direct X file needed to launch istaria.exe when dac and guaran suggested direct had a install error message but dxdiag did say it was fine but I basically uninstalled the game removing all files etc and reinstalling. I unchecked the patch to blight option and reinstalled directx using the links provided and it worked

That's interesting and actually that makes sense.

The ENB direct 8/9 converter currently only exists on blight patch, it hasn't been moved to Live.

    http://community.istaria.com/forum/s...sues-with-ease

Whats different between the Blight Patch is that the d3d8.dll file (enbconverter) exists there, but not on Live patch yet.

I suspect that after you have blight patch box ticked, it places the file in the main folder. Even if you untick the blight patch box, it will still reside there. The patcher can not delete files. I've got a hunch that if you had deleted this d3d8.dll, that it would've fixed the problems.

Going forward, I'm wondering if that in addition the EMBSeries dx converter (d3d8.dll) if the devs should also add a copy of Microsoft's d3dx9.dll file to the games main folder.

I know that during a fresh install of the game, it will install the VC2005 libraries and pretty sure it will try to install the DX9 files. But it places all of those files in the Windows folder. I'm wondering since we're overriding some things by putting the converter in the main folder, that sometimes theres some exception that would need the dx9 file there, too. But I'm not sure if it's that simple, the file might actually need registered (regsvr32) to actually work, needs researching.

For now, if someone happens to come across this thread and has a similar issue, look in your main game folder (likely C:\Program Files (x86)\Istaria) and see if you have a file called d3d8.dll . If so, delete it and see if that fixes the problem.

support was pretty fast and knowledgeable with my login problem, which also seems to have been a directx problem. ascal was able to pin it down himself, but if you aren't that smart or confident about diy, i highly recommend the most excellent folks at customer service.
