    Combat Overhaul
A year and a half later and it's finally here. Initially announced in 2022, the combat overhaul is a massive effort to breathe new life into the combat system and get rid of some of those decades old cobwebs. The coming changes are far too widespread to put in a simple summary, so let me direct you all to the Combat Overhaul document if you wish to read in-depth on all the changes we've done along with their reasoning.

Rest assured, Istaria is not changing from it's tab-targeting roots and we expect the transition to be smooth for the vast majority of all.

    Tactical Mastery and Critical Rating
These are two new attributes that we are introducing with the Combat Overhaul. Tactical Mastery dictates how hard an attack would hit, or what may be more commonly seen as Armor Penetration. It is gained innately through leveling up but is also impacted by Dexterity or Focus (depending on if the attack is physical or magical), as well as rating difference between attacker and target (the higher the difference the lesser the impact of Tactical Mastery).

Critical Rating allows for attacks to critically strike, doing 50% extra damage, and is gained through school levels, equipment, and/or buffs. The chance to land a critical hit is calculated using Critical Rating, Dexterity or Focus (depending on the nature of the attack) and adjusted based on the rating difference between attacker and target.

    Dispels
The way dispels work has been altered to foster a more reliable system; previously dispels functioned through a complex system of quality of the dispel versus an assigned value on the buff/debuff, this value was independent of the tier of the buff/debuff in question and thus never quite clear. The new system compares the quality of the dispel/cleanse (the lowest tier it is gained at) and a calculated tier on the buff/defbuff. These tiers are then compared and a chance of success is determined using the table below.:
    Tier Difference % Chance
4 or more above Automatic Failure
    3 above 25%
    2 above 50%
    1 above 75%
Same tier or below Automatic Success

The quality of dispels and cleanses is as follows:
    • Adventure: Dismissal (tech effect) (Tier 2)
    • Clarity I (Tier 2)
    • Detoxify Self (Tier 2)
    • Detoxify Other (Tier 3)
    • Group Detoxify (Tier 4)
    • Inner Flame (Breath of Fire quest) (Tier 4)

    • Morning Dew (Tier 2 to 5)
    • Cleanse (tech effect) (Tier matches tier of technique)
    • Dispel spell (Tier matches the spell tier)
    • Purify spell (Tier matches the spell tier)

    • Detoxify Self II (a tier 4 dispel) is now gained by Druid and Blood Mage at level 56, Monk at 57, Shaman and Guardian at 66.
    • Detoxify Self III (a tier 6 dispel) is now gained by Druid and Blood Mage at level 86, Monk at 87, Shaman and Guardian at 96.
    • Detoxify Other II (a Tier 6 dispel) is now gained by Druid at level 88 and Blood Mage at level 94.

    Delay
The system for handling ability, spell, item delay has been overhauled with the goal of giving us greater control over how much delay players can accumulate and how much impact it can have. Two new attributes have been added called Martial Alacrity and Magical Alacrity. DelayMods have been replaced with modifiers of these statistics. As you can tell by the names, these attributes impact magical spell attacks vs non-magical melee or ranged attacks.

A third attribute, known as Gathering Alacrity, will impact the speed of gathering.

    Mitigation
Mitigation provided by armor, instead of offering a flat reduction of damage, now negates a % of incoming damage. At its maximum, you will be able to ignore 90% of the incoming damage through a combination of resistances (which can contribute a max of 25%) and armor, though reaching this maximum at any level may prove challenging. This value scales with you as you level so that armor will always be effective so long as you are properly equipped.

Mitigation through armor is also less effective against certain damage types, as it is only 85% as effective against Arcane (Flame, Energy, Ice, Nature, Blight, and Primal), 70% effective against Mystical (Mind, Spirit, and Life), and 50% effective against Ethereal. Making resistances even more valuable against these.

Lastly your mitigation will increase innately if you are attacked by monsters 10 or more levels beneath you. The greater the level difference, the greater the impact to mitigation, though this cannot exceed the 90% limit.

    Resistances and Wards
A change to Resistances and Wards with the Combat Overhaul is that they have been simplified; Rather than matching up against each individual damage type (e.g. Flame damage being checked against Flame Resistance/Ward, Slash against Slash Resistance/Ward, and so forth) the types have been reduced to four (Physical, Arcane, Mystical and Ethereal). The goal of this change is to make it easier to boost your mitigation against a mixture of damage, instead of needing sets of gear for each individual element.

    Ethereal Armor and Damage
Ethereal Damage is no longer what is known as a Damage-Path (like physical and magical), but instead is a now damage type (similar to Spirit, Flame or Slash). This means that it will be checked against standard armor values (though armor is less effective by 50% against it).

As a result of this change, Ethereal Armor has been replaced with Ethereal Resistance and a new stat called Ethereal Ward has been added. This stat can be buffed/debuffed and applied to equipment through techniques like any other ward stat.

    Blighted Equipment Revisit
The Withered Aegis have been dropping equipment for a long time now, however, they have always seemed to like a particular setup of techniques for these items. With this revisit we have fixed a long standing bug, where the Blighted Equipment System would not pick from the entire technique pool, as well as expanded it with many new items and techniques (including new stats we've introduced with the combat overhaul!)

    • Random bonuses, generated for equipable Blighted items (whether looted or created from a formula), will once again provide a wider variety of potential bonuses.
    • Blighted items now have a chance to receive a socket when generated. These have the same restrictions as on regular equipment.
    • Blighted items now have a chance to receive a Blighted dye when generated. Tura, in Sslanis Jungle, seems to be very interested in these items.
    • Blighted Staves and Blighted Fine Staves now have a chance to receive a Metal-Shod bonus, which allow parrying, add a great boost to Parry statistic and change appearance to blighted metal according to tier.
    • Many Blighted Invisible Caps/Helms and Masks were missing. They have been added to treasure tables.
    • All blighted scales now offer an Armor bonus like regular crafted scales do.
    • Malus have been removed, at the exception of the race restrictions which are now tiered and associated to a racial bonus:
      • Race Restriction: Dryad: Nature skill bonus.

    Pouch Changes
Ah pouches... The intended inventory sorter that has been overshadowed by backpacks and/or scale packs pretty much from day 1. In this update we bring a revised idea on pouches to give them an edge over the packs, as well as expand their range of available colors.

    • Backpack Pouches now inherit the parent container's maximum bulk and item stack capacity, rather than a tiered limit. This is true regardless of where the pouch is stored; player inventory, vault, or even in a structure.
    • As a result of the above, the various tiers of pouches no longer provide any specific benefit over another and the only difference is the icon color.
    • Backpacks and Scale packs now have a weight of 50, 45, 40, 35, 30 & 25 for Tiers 1 through 6. (was 55,50,40,30,25 & 20 for backpacks and 5 on all tiers for scale packs).
    • Scale packs now offer the correct amount of stacks when used as a container in an inventory; 125, 130, 135, 140, 145 & 150 for Tiers 1 through 6. (was 100 across the board, as an equipable they already had the right values).
    • New Colored Backpack Pouches:
      • Formulas have been added to create pouches of every dye color currently in-game.
      • The new Colored Backpack Pouch formulas are sold by fashion designers across the various racial cities in the following collections: Basic Shades, Complex Shades, Metallic Shades, Gem Shades, Azulyte Shades, Antique Shades, and Unique Shades.
      • The formulas require a new item known as Alchemical Dye Fixative, this item replaces the pouch patterns of the old colored pouch formulas, and is also sold by Fashion Designers.
      • A new set of Master Alchemical Dye Formulas have been added to Ghent Flaskshaper in Aughundell to fill out the missing products. These follow the pattern as dyes of lower tiers, requiring half of the resources needed for their respective dye kits, with the exception of the ones that require a monster component, those will still require 1 of the appropriate component.
      • The old colored pouches (e.g. Red Flaxen Backpack Pouch, Gold Silk Backpack Pouch, etc.) have all been marked as obsolete as the new system replaces the old and offers the same colors, however, any existing pouches will still receive the utility upgrade.

    Key Changes
In the past keys have been somewhat problematic in their implementation. The changes we're putting in with this update should make them far more foolproof in execution, and result in less keys lost!

    • Keys will now instantly open (kill) chests that they are appropriate for, regardless of any damage modifiers present on the user. This has been applied to regular keys as well as those used in quests.
    • Removed quest completion requirement to Expert Key and Complex Key Mold formulas.
    • Expert Key and Complex Key Mold formulas are now sold by Finagle Biggletorque in Delgarath.
    • Expert Key and Complex Key Mold formulas aren’t attuned anymore.
    • Finagle Biggletorque sells all key patterns again.
