If you have titles turned off, there is no way to tell that the little gnome is your vault meister, maybe add a sign or some other visual cue?

That's an interesting point. However, there are a lot of NPCs like that throughout the world. I would suggest in return to play with the titles turned on until you learn who is who/what, and then turn them off, if you like playing that way.

Otherwise, you can find out who they are by greeting them.
