Thread: What would you do first?

Default What would you do first?

I have just recently returned to Istaria, but unfortunately haven't had much chance to be in game yet. From what I have seen so far, Order is much quieter that it was 4 months ago when I left. This got me thinking about what we all post here about making this a better game. As we all know, there are many things that need to be address, but which should be first. Content, lag, graphics, etc are all valid issues but which should be first?

I think the devs goal at this time should be to draw in new players, and entice back the old ones (such as myself). It is depressing to wander an empty world, and difficult to convice new players to join such a world.

I believe that there were 2 things that set HZ apart in the MMO world, and those should be the items fixed first. First, player cities/housing. When I rejoined I was looking forward to buying a plot and building something - alas it doesn't look like it is going to happen, due to the plots all being sold. A great majority of these probably owned by people who no longer play. So here is my first suggestion - zone the cities. While this goes against the idea of a seamless world, it would reduce the lag surrounding the city, and make it infinately upgradeable in regards to plots. Just add more plots, it won't affect the world map. How do you explain this in the game world? Have an event where the WA attack and drop blight anchors on the cities repeatedly. The greatest minds of the Empire get together and devise a plan to protect the cities. The greatest of the Gifted go on quests and crafting binges to create magical machines around each city that will create a magical sphere around the city. The city and surrounding space will be sucked into the plane of Santuary (or some such), leaving a great gaping hole in the ground. Portals are erected at the site of each city to teleport into it from outside, and you can choose to teleport into the city, or into, or outside anothercity. TheWA could still invade by opening portals of there own into the sphere, for events. There could be great camps of WA at the former citysites, to reprent there searchfor the cities.

Second, crafting.Crafting was the thing I most enjoyed when I originally played, but I think it needs updating.I don't have a lot of ideasfor this, just a couple of thoughts. Oneof the bigger beefs when I left, was the removal of the fieldcrafting stations. It makes things a lot harder. I played the Wishbeta for about a week, but they had something I liked.Portable crafting stations. Crafters could create sawhorses to cut wood on, and fire pits tosmelt ore with. How about something in HZlike that? Tinkers could make them: Collapsable sawhorses, and inflatable anvils :) It couldsomething that would beplaced, would have to stay where it was set up, and then degraded with useuntil it wasdestoyed byuse. Only the person who set it up could see/use it, unless they changed the permissions. Higher tiers would last longer and they could be teched to give bonuses to crafting schools. I think item degredation should beworked in for all items, one way or another, but that is another post altogether....

Well, I dont think the "Fix the Bugs First" people have got it right. Bugs are retro looking, and are something that should be fixed regardless of future direction. Who wants a bug free 'almost static' world?

There is some dragon stuff comming, eventually, we are told, but whoopty. Long overdue, and the trouble at AE with the chapter 11 thing is really their problem, not ours.

Istaria offers A wild and mixed combat developement system, and a very (overly imho) featured crafting system. We also have a rudimentary housing system (housing expanded later).

Thats only three things. Not much there if you ask me!

We have the odd event, which is nice as well.

The game does not however, have systems in place that allow you to do anything much else. What about permanent and ongoing Title quests (as titles should rot away). What about a "path" like system for the adventure schools; dragons have lots of quests (although kill X number X's dosent go anywhere does it?)?

    ************************
I'll use Mages as one example.
Mage XP and developement for example should be as much about 'playing' the mage as blowing up monsters - and development should go along the same lines as the Dragons. Quests, tests of individual ability, and some drudgery work to 'prove' your dedication to it. Quests and tests should be set for the mages skills. The tests of Flame, the tests of Mind, the tests of Energy. These would also need to be repeated, with variation of course, every ten levels before you even CAN progress.

Tests could be set with constraint - "Use only your Flame spells" - "You can not be grouped for this test", etc.

Now there's a direction to be heading in.

    ************************

We also need distractions. Competitions and games provide an opportunity to interact outside your 'circle'. These should be primarily level independant, NPC organised, and hosted on baby islands to mix up the newbs and ancients more.

Pets, for no other reason than they can be fun to play with are cool; Pet Giant Snail Races, Ruxus Chariot Races, and pet training skills to keep it a challenge.

    ************************
Rudimentary Housing system? Houses are a storage system atm, not homes. We can't decorate them and make them a home. Homes should give endless opportunities to customise and show off your charactor and personality. They create and infinite list of new things to do/make/sell/buy/long for. Stuffed animal collections? Arcane rare item collections? A Hall of Arms? It never stops with decorations. Ultima Online proved that beyond argument.

    ************************
Lore is important, and it exists, but it seems to be only there for the excuses needed to justify additions. A rich history is a nice thing to have, and silently adds body and substance to a world too focussed on XP.

Just a few of my thoughts on the matter, for what they are worth.

AE needs to start releasing new content in a timely manner. They are taking far too long releasing content and players are getting bored.

This especially applies to events. The last really interesting event was the Novo machine shard merge event, which took place, what? 5 months ago. Since then, Istaria has been feeling more dead and lifeless each month. The new blighted items and dragonclaws are nice... but they are not real events that give players a purpose in the game.

We need some real events. Heck, if it takes too much time to make a new event, how about bringing back an old event. The regal weapons event only lasted 5 days and many players didnt have a chance to get the forms - how about bringing it back for an encore?

Add immediately useable armor, weapons and jewelry. Not the blighted junk. This loot would be bind on pickup to avoid farming it to sell to players.

Change multiclassing so that you could only be 2x100 and 2x50 in both adventuring and crafting.

Lessen the materials required to make houses

Put in areas where pvp can happen, for those that want to thump their chests and beat up on players. There would be no monsters to kill or materials to mine in these areas.

Allow dragons to go 30 higher than whatever the current max is for characters because they cannot multiclass.

Give dragons a breath weapon that does more damage than any other spell in the game, but limit the number of times it can be used in a day. Something like a 30 minute timer on it.

Equip all humanoid mobs with ranged attacks

Put mounts in the game, you would have to get enough "fame" to own one. Fame would be gotten by killing the WA.

The bug fixing should be on going as larch stated.

They need adventure content, something to get the people still here involved in the world.

An update to the anchor system to make them more dynamic less frequent more rewarding would be good especially if they attacked towns.

Or rewarding/challenging (no not cash and xp) quests

    Aqurius,

It's not that I like or want zoning, but if it solves a greater issue I would live with it. I would never go to EQ2, due to their public acknowledgement that they plan on releasing 2 expansions a year, plus mods like 5 times a year.
I am not really trying to pitch my ideas as the solution, just mulling over options in my limited free time. The most serious issue that HZ faces is lack of new blood, therefore lack of new cash. I just wanted to bat some ideas around, for relatively immediate/easy fixes to bring in and keep new players.

A well thought out and comprehensive treasure hunting system. One that is as much a career path and a trade or adventure school. Heaps of different bases: race based, skill based, mixed group dependant, solo ones, ones that need miners to dig up, mages to de-enchant, tinkers to lockpick, dwarfs/gnomes to fit through, dragons to fly up to a key/switch/trigger. Massive groups to keep areas clear. It's a system that is needed really badly, and open a massive new opportunity for expansion and co-operation/socialisation.
