    Default Y Halo Thar

I just finished putting my new computer together, and have a 22" widescreen now. Downloading the game onto my new box. Hopefully 4gig RAM and 512Mb video card will handle the game now.

    So, WHASSAP?

Good gods, no! *shudder* XP was the most that I could stand to upgrade to. And even it is unbearably annoying!

I thought only Vista supported more then 2 gigs of ram.

No, I'm stuck with 512 atm because my motherboard is very finicky about ram. Tried 2 different types already, and got the feared bios beepcode of doom.

I'm working towards a new pc eventually. I just feel lucky the mboard liked the graphics card I updated.

I believe that XP can address 4G, but 1G is reserved addresses, leaving ~3G usable. So most consider 2G to be the practical XP upper limit.

All 32-bit operating system have 4096MB of memory address allocation. 2^32 = 4294967296 bytes = 4096MB = 4GB. However, system ram isn't the only thing used by those memory addresses. I believe that standard limit for Windows 32-bit (XP or Vista) is 2GB of RAM for applications and 2GB for system use. A special argument/switch (/3GB) in the boot.ini can increase application memory usage to 3GB (and system use to 1GB).

While this may be true. Windows may not display 4096MB of RAM in various diagnostics applications. Reason: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929605/en-us . Also true for Windows XP x86.

Mirsathia, don't be surprised if for example (dxdiag) only recognizes ~3.25-3.5GB of memory.

Oh, that's quite enough for me. I bought so much just so I wouldn't have to upgrade for a long time! =)

And so long as you don't get Vista, you won't have to!

I want your new comp now, seriously. I'm running on 1gb of RAM and an older vid card (256mb, Saphire Radeon 9600 XD)
